Have I rights under the Freedom of Information Acts?
Yes. The main objective of the Freedom of Information Acts 1997 and 2003 is to foster and develop a culture of openness, transparency and accountability in public bodies. The Acts confers three new legal rights on individuals:
- The right to obtain information held by the Institute.
- The right to obtain reasons for decisions affecting oneself.
- The right to have official information relating to oneself amended where it is incorrect, incomplete or misleading.
These rights are supported by internal review and external appeals procedures.
The Acts asserts the right of individuals to obtain access to official information to the greatest extent possible consistent with the public interest and the right to privacy, that is not generally available through other sources.
Under the Acts the Institute has published detailed information on its website regarding all aspects of its activities:
- Section 15 - A Guide to the Structure, Functions, Services and Records of the Institute
Section 16 - A Guide to the Rules, Guidelines and Practices Governing the Activities of the Institute The Freedom of Information Officer assists students, staff and the general public with any requests for information under the Acts.
